Andrea Ramirez Armada

It's hard to describe who I am without telling you where I'm from. The trouble is, I'm from nowhere and everywhere all at once. Born in Venezuela in the 90s to a mixed heritage family, raised in the U.S., now living in London — I've spent almost exactly the same amount of time in each place. So where do I belong? I'm Latin, I'd say. That brackets the experience best. And it's not a unique story within the diaspora — if anything it's a cliché. "Ha! So you've migrated? Welcome to the club."

What it's given me is an eye for the space between things. Between what's performed and what's real, between cultures, between the life that almost happened and the one that did. That's what I make films about. My short Archive of Almost-Loves asks whether AI is making us more lonely — and whether grief, the human kind, is the thing actually worth protecting. My feature Underbelly follows a Mexican-American teenager who travels to Mexico to say goodbye to her dying grandmother, and discovers the family guards a secret world of lucha-magic beneath the earth. She has to choose which version of herself is real. I wrote it because I know the answer isn't one or the other.

Currently based in London. Working everywhere.

I started my career at 19 as a runner at ARS DDB in Caracas. I once kept a show on air during a national blackout. I've directed for Google, The FA, Formula E, Ford, Lincoln, Standard Chartered, Diriyah / VCCP. British Arrows shortlisted. Cannes Lions shortlisted. D&AD pencil.
